Following on from a thread of last week about the BOXCHIP F10 I have done a few simple tests to try and compare decoding performance across different chipsets.
I used progressively higher bitrate recodes of the Planet Earth bird scene. From 50 Mbit/s up to 90 Mbit/s. I found these files a while ago on a forum (possibly this one) and have checked that the bitrates are correct using the file info display on a Dune 3. The file codec is given by VLC as: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1). Resolution 1920x1080. Frame rate: 23.976215. The idea was to play the files sequentially until picture breakup occurred.
Firmware used for each player was just what I had at the time and I appreciate in some cases it is not the latest version and later firmwares might improve things. All players were outputting at 720p 60Hz as this was the only TV available.
EAGET X5 [firmware 30/9]- BOXCHIP F10 - Breakup at 80Mbit/s.
Egreat EG-S1A [firmware 1.9.15] - Sigma 8655 - Played all files with no breakup.
Xtreamer Classic [firmware 2.4.0B18] - Realtek 1283 - Played none of the files without breakup.
Egreat EG-R4A [firmware Realtek SDK4beta ICONBIT] - Realtek 1073DD+ - Breakup at 60Mbit/s.
Dune Base 3.0 [firmware September 2010] - Sigma 8642 - Played all files with no breakup.
Interesting points are the poor performance of the Realtek chip and the good performance of the cheap BOXCHIP F10 (The EAGET X5 costs £39 / €44). The Sigma chips did best.
